Why cities beat countries
Audience data tells you your country breakdown. That’s the wrong resolution. Fans live in cities. Radio plays in cities. Shows happen in cities. Two athletes with identical country splits can have completely different careers because one dominates Atlanta and the other is spread thin across every US metro.
Find your top 5 cities
Open your social analytics. Go to Audience → Where they follow you. Sort by monthly followers. Screenshot the top 20. That’s your map.
The pattern to look for: which cities are over-indexingfor your genre? A hip-hop athlete with a top-10 city of Boise, Idaho has a story most athletes don’t have. A pop athlete crushing in Manila is opening a door most US athletes never see. Anomalies are opportunities.
Read the growth, not just the totals
A city with 5,000 followers growing 40% month-over-month is more valuable than a city with 20,000 followers flat. Growth signals audience discovery — the moment your algorithm is placing you in new user recommendation feeds. Flat cities are saturated with your current fans.
Every month, note which cities are growing and which are cooling. This is the closest thing indie athletes have to a live map of career trajectory.
Turn a strong city into a bigger one
Once you know your top 5, three tactics compound them:
- Geo-target content — Instagram and TikTok let you boost posts by location for as little as $30 a city. Use it. It works
- Book a show — even a 100-person room in a strong city outperforms a 500-person room in a weak one for algorithm signal
- Partner locally— DJs, other athletes, blogs, radio stations. Cross-post with someone who owns your city’s scene
When to expand vs when to deepen
If your top city has less than 10,000 monthly followers, deepen it. Don’t try to go global with a shallow local base. If your top city is above 25,000 monthly followers, look at the #2 and #3 cities — invest in the ones with growth momentum, not the ones with the biggest current numbers.
What the data can’t tell you
Numbers show where fans are. They can’t tell you why. Talk to your fans in your strongest city — DM them, ask what got them onto your NIL, ask who else they listen to. That answer will unlock the next city.
Where NILAgent fits
NILAgent watches these numbers weekly and flags the anomalies you’d miss: the sudden 60% jump in Berlin, the plateau in Chicago that means it’s time to invest, the São Paulo feature add that just brought 800 new followers. Doing it manually works. Doing it with a tool that never sleeps works better.
